Hosta Update – 2024
March 20, 2024 – Right now, our hosta are still dormant. Last season due to mysterious circumstances, we lost quite a few of our plants. I have a potted plant bed that needs tearing out and we shall see what comes in the garden this year.
Hosta are a delight to slugs. However, we do not get slugs. I suspect many just up and winter-killed or they just reached their lifespan.
I have a few shade loving varieties and have one that is fine in sun, but last season was also unbelievably hot. And I have tried many varieties to no avail. So I also blame the soil conditions here are not the greatest.

Update
I think as soon as I can, I will dismantle my hosta bed, recover my pots from that area, get some new dirt to put in the cans and kill two birds with one stone putting the glads in the cans. The hosta all winter-killed and that area needs to be cleaned out. Then I can put my nursery cans of glads there temporarily.
We have a shed that we want to move and until I get gravel for underneath that, I can’t put the cans of potted glads where I would like them. It is all one step at a time.
_______________
5-1-24 – We dismantled the hosta bed and pulled all of the pots out. What is left there are a few bushes that need to be removed. We are not sure yet what to do in that spot. Now I am thinking to put lily of the valley and violets there. Plant them direct and just let it go. Anything to make it easier. But first those bushes have to go.
